behind the scenes action at the Kathleen van der Spek Fall/Winter photo shoot in SF!

This is what many of you have been waiting for...juicy behind-the-scenes photos and information about what goes on in the world of fashion!

On the set of my first professional photo shoot, as Kathleen's assistant, I was delegated the job of being the hairstylist while also providing styling assistance with the clothing designs and draping, as well as giving input and suggestions about the best composition and location for each shot.

As we were on a time constraint, this meant running around throughout the shoot making sure that everything was perfect, in order to get the best possible photos.

Without having an extensive training in hairstyling, I used the fashion blogger time-old tradition of youtube tutorials to get all the information I needed, while also practicing the look on my friend, Kristin, the night before.

and after!
oops, you can tell in this photo that there's a scraggly strand out of place. there were a few difficulties throughout the shoot with the hair staying in place, but for the most part, it was okay.

I had never actually been on set of a professional photo shoot before, and I think that I may have underestimated how much equipment is needed! It kind of makes my camera (which I thought was pretty fancy & schmancy) look like child's play.

I liked that I had the opportunity to swoop in and catch some photos of the in-between moments.

Here Amanda was laughing because the photographer's assistant was controlling the lighting from the roof.

I like how the reflection in the window was captured here.

I did a bit of editing to make the photos have a bit of a retro look to fit the film noir theme of the shoot. Some photographers find this kind of amateur editing obnoxious, but I think it's fun!

Designer, Kathleen van der Spek and photographer, Weber Shih, eyeing the photos.

As you can see, the shoot took place at a gorgeous house in San Francisco, belonging to one of Kathleen's friends, who was also there- and was gracious enough to let the whole crew in, toasting us bagels and making us cappuccinos throughout the morning!

And after six straight hours of hard work, it was finished! Stay tuned to see the finished professional look book!

I hope that you enjoyed my little tour of the shoot. Hopefully I'll be helping out on more photo shoots for different designers in the near future...we'll have to wait and see!

Xoxo,

Camille
